BRAGG CREEK REAL ESTATE

Bragg Creek Alberta Bragg Creek is nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, 44 kilometers west of Calgary on Highway 22. This rustic little village is nestled in the lee of the foothills to the south and west, the T'suu T'ina Nation (Sarcee) Indian reserve to the east and crown land known as the Jumping Pound Lease to the north. The hamlet of Bragg Creek sits on the banks of the crystal clear Elbow River, and surrounded by lush pine forests. The unspoiled natural surroundings and wildlife attract city folk on weekends and holidays. Just west of town is Bragg Creek Provincial Park, with miles of trails ideal for hiking, mountain biking and cross country skiing.

Bragg Creek itself is a small stream with its' source on the slopes of Moose Mountain that flows into the Elbow River in the Hamlet which in turn flows into the Elbow that meanders through Calgary. Moose Mountain is 2,437 m (7,995 ft) tall and is on the leading edge of the Rocky Mountain front range. When viewed from Springbank it bears a striking resemblance to the head and back of a moose. Banded Peak, at 2,934 m (9,626 ft) forms another scenic backdrop in the community. It is named for the horizontal stripe which slices across the top of the mountain.

The first Youth Hostel in North America came to be as a temporary camp erected at the confluence of Bragg Creek and the Elbow River on July 1, 1933. Mary and Catherine Barclay set up the 12 by 14 foot tent. In 1936 a wooden cabin with a dining room and two sleeping rooms was built 3 kilometers north on the way to Wintergreen. The hostel was later rebuilt inside the Kananaskis Country entrance at West Bragg Creek, but it burned down in 1984 and not been replaced.
